Solarmeter® Model 6.5R Reptile UVI (Index) Lamp Meter

The Solarmeter 6.5R is a handheld instrument for measuring ultraviolet (UV) radiation specifically in the UV-B range, which is important for reptiles, especially captive reptiles. The "R" in the name stands for "reptile," indicating that the device is suitable for reptile enthusiasts and pet owners who want to ensure that their reptiles are receiving the proper UV illumination for their health.

The Solarmeter 6.5R measures UV index, which is a unit of measurement for the intensity of UV radiation. The UV index is a scale that usually ranges from 0 to 11+ and is used to indicate the strength of the sun's UV radiation. Factors such as the angle of the sun and atmospheric conditions are taken into account to determine a value that indicates the potential for damage from UV radiation.

For reptiles, UV-B radiation is essential to their overall health and well-being because it helps them synthesize vitamin D3, which is critical for calcium absorption and bone health. When reptiles do not receive adequate UV-B radiation, they can develop health problems such as metabolic bone disease (MBD).

The Solarmeter 6.5R Reptile UV Index Meter allows reptile keepers to monitor UV-B levels in their animals' enclosures to ensure they are providing adequate light levels. This will ensure that the reptiles are receiving the UV radiation they need for their physiological processes without being overexposed, which can also be harmful.

It is important to follow the guidelines and recommendations that apply to your reptile species and its UV-B requirements, as different species have different needs. In addition, UV-B output from UVB lamps and natural sunlight can decrease over time, so regular monitoring is essential to provide optimal conditions for your reptiles.

Solarlight have made this Solarmeter 6.5R meter easier for reptile owners in particular by updating the graphs with the latest science on correct UV dosages for reptiles. The Ferguson zone map on top of the meter provides the user with an instant and accurate reference for the meter's UVI reading.

Sensor

Silicon carbide (SiC) photodiode packaged in a hermetically sealed UV glass window cap. The interference filter blocks most UVA responses, as shown in Spectral Sensitivity Graph.

Use

Point the sensor window on the top of the meter directly at a UV source to operate your solar meter. Press and hold the push button on the front of the meter. For best results, note the distance the reading was taken from the UV source to ensure repeatable results. The operating voltage of the battery ranges from 9 V to 6.5 V. Below 6.5 V, the numbers on the LCD display begin to float, indicating that the battery needs to be replaced. With a normal operating load, a standard 9 V battery will last approximately 2 years.

Proper Use of the Solarmeter® Ultraviolet Radiometer

Wear eye protection when checking UV lamps (goggles, with side shields is ideal) Allow lamps to warm up before taking measurements (at least 15 minutes better 30min) When checking lamp aging, be sure to use the same position and distance to ensure accurate readings Lamps should be replaced when power drops to about 50% of their original (new) readings

Ferguson Zone Graph

The above chart is an abridged version from the January 2016 Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research, "How Much UV-B Does My Reptile Need? The UV Tool, a guide to selecting UV lighting for captive reptiles and amphibians"

by Drs. Frances Baines, Joe Chattell, James Dale, Dan Garrick, Iri Gill, Matt Goetz, Tim Skelton, and Matt Swatman.

Care and Maintenance

Do not expose the meter to extreme temperatures, humidity, shock, or dust. Accidental exposure to extreme humidity or damp conditions may result in abnormally high readings. Allowing the meter to dry naturally or placing it in a bag of silica gel will restore normal function. Clean the instrument with a very soft cloth. Keep the sensor free of oil, dirt, etc.
