NEKTON-Rep-Calcium-Pur - Pure calcium for reptiles and amphibians

NEKTON-Rep Calcium-Pur is a highly effective pure calcium preparation without vitamin D3 for the prevention and compensation of calcium deficiency and its secondary diseases (such as rickets, deformities, shell softening in tortoises and general growth disorders). It promotes a healthy calcium metabolism and supports the optimal development and maintenance of the skeleton in reptiles and amphibians.

NEKTON-Rep-Calcium-Pur does not contain vitamin D3 and is specially developed for animals that are supplied with sufficient UVB light or free-living animals with sufficient sun exposure (approx. 10 hours). These animals can produce their own vitamin D and therefore do not need any extra vitamin D3 in the product.
Otherwise our NEKTON-Rep Calcium+D3 is recommended.

Calcium is one of the most important supplements. Calcium is not only important for eggshell and bone formation, but also for other vital processes (such as muscle contractions). The calcium content of feed is usually very low. The feed insects in particular lead to a calcium deficiency if not supplemented. As the animals also consume additional calcium in the wild, this must also be offered in the terrarium.

Females and growing animals in particular have a higher requirement for calcium. Reptiles and amphibians need vitamin D so that calcium can be utilized by the body. No additional vitamin D needs to be administered via food if the animal is offered the right quantity and quality of UVB radiation. Sufficient UVB radiation in healthy animals does not usually lead to vitamin D deficiency.

A precursor of vitamin D3 is formed in the skin under the influence of sunlight (or UVB radiation) and heat from vitamin precursors ingested with food (these are mainly found in muscle and fatty tissue of food animals and plants).  These are finally converted into the active form of vitamin D3 in the kidney tissue. The required amount of UVB radiation (intensity, duration of illumination) depends on the animal species.

If there is a lack of calcium, the animals often try to compensate for the calcium deficiency by ingesting substrate, which ultimately leads to severe constipation. For this reason, the calcium must not be in the substrate. Both calcium sand and bird sand are unsuitable for the terrarium. A calcium supplement should therefore be added regularly with the food.
